TFCC Injury: Wrist Pain Relief Through Physiotherapy
What Is a TFCC Injury?
The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is a group of ligaments and cartilage structures that stabilise the wrist β especially between the ulna (forearm bone) and the carpal bones. Injury to the TFCC can lead to persistent wrist pain and instability.
Causes:
Fall onto an outstretched hand
Repetitive wrist rotation or heavy lifting
Degenerative wear with age
Sporting trauma (e.g. tennis, gymnastics)
Symptoms:
Pain on the ulnar (pinky) side of the wrist
Clicking or catching with wrist movement
Weak grip strength
Swelling or tenderness around the wrist
Pain during twisting motions (e.g. opening jars)
Physiotherapy Treatment:
β
Wrist mobilisation and gentle joint therapy
β
Strengthening of forearm and wrist stabilisers
β
Bracing or taping to offload the TFCC
β
Load management advice and activity modification
β
Education on wrist-safe lifting and grip techniques
Long-Term Recovery:
With tailored physio care, most TFCC injuries improve without surgery. We focus on restoring full function, preventing recurrence, and helping you return confidently to work, sport, and daily tasks.
