Cerebral Palsy: Supporting Function & Independence with Physiotherapy
What Is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological condition caused by brain injury or abnormal brain development, usually before, during, or shortly after birth. It affects movement, muscle tone, and coordination.
Causes:
Birth complications (lack of oxygen, premature birth)
Infections during pregnancy
Brain injury in early infancy
Genetic or developmental issues
Symptoms:
Muscle stiffness (spasticity) or floppiness
Delayed motor milestones (sitting, crawling, walking)
Poor balance or coordination
Involuntary movements or tremors
Asymmetrical movement patterns
Physiotherapy Treatment:
✅ Early intervention to encourage developmental milestones
✅ Stretching and tone management techniques
✅ Gait training and mobility aids
✅ Strength and motor control exercises
✅ Orthotic and equipment prescription
✅ Parent and carer education
Long-Term Recovery:
Physiotherapy for CP is ongoing and evolves with age. Our goal is to promote participation, prevent secondary issues, and enhance quality of life — whether in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.
