Calf Tear: Physio for Fast and Safe Muscle Recovery

What Is a Calf Tear?
A calf tear is a strain or rupture of the gastrocnemius or soleus muscles, often caused by sudden forceful movements or overstretching during activity.

Causes:

  • Sprinting or sudden take-off

  • Jumping or pushing off the toes

  • Inadequate warm-up or tight calves

  • Previous calf injuries or fatigue

Symptoms:

  • Sudden sharp or stabbing pain in the calf

  • Swelling or bruising

  • Difficulty walking or rising onto toes

  • A “pop” or tearing sensation at the time of injury

Physiotherapy Treatment:
✅ RICE protocol in early stages (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
✅ Manual therapy to reduce tightness and promote healing
✅ Gradual strengthening of the calf and ankle muscles
✅ Sport-specific retraining and return-to-run programs

Long-Term Recovery:
Physio aims to restore full strength and flexibility while preventing re-injury, so you can return to sport or work with confidence.
