Quadriceps Contusion: Treating Thigh Bruising from Impact

What Is a Quadriceps Contusion?
A bruise or hematoma in the quadriceps muscle group, often caused by direct contact in contact sports like football or rugby.

Causes:

  • Collision or tackle during sport

  • Falling directly onto the thigh

  • Repetitive blunt trauma

Symptoms:

  • Pain, swelling, and bruising in the thigh

  • Difficulty bending the knee

  • Muscle tightness or weakness

  • Tender to touch

Physiotherapy Treatment:
✅ RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) initially
✅ Gentle range of motion and mobility work
✅ Gradual strengthening and stretching
✅ Sports-specific return-to-play plan

Long-Term Recovery:
Proper physio care reduces the risk of myositis ossificans (bone formation in muscle) and ensures complete recovery without stiffness or weakness.
