Spondylolisthesis: When One Vertebra Slips Forward

Excerpt: Experiencing lower back pain, tight hamstrings, or nerve symptoms? Spondylolisthesis could be the cause — physio helps stabilise the spine and relieve pressure.

What Is Spondylolisthesis?
Spondylolisthesis occurs when one vertebra slips forward over the one below it, often due to a pars defect or degenerative changes.

Causes:

  • Pars defect (spondylolysis)

  • Degenerative changes in older adults

  • Trauma or spinal surgery

  • Congenital abnormalities

Symptoms:

  • Lower back pain, often after activity

  • Hamstring tightness

  • Leg pain or nerve symptoms (numbness, tingling)

  • Pain with extension or standing for long periods

Physiotherapy Treatment:
✅ Core stabilisation and postural control
✅ Avoidance of provocative extension movements
✅ Mobility work for hips and thoracic spine
✅ Activity modification and education

Long-Term Recovery:
Physiotherapy builds control and stability around the spine, reducing slippage risk and improving movement confidence — essential for preventing progression.
