Scoliosis: Understanding and Managing Spinal Curvature

What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, often developing in adolescence, which can impact posture, muscle balance, and spinal mechanics.

Causes:

  • Idiopathic (unknown cause, most common)

  • Congenital spinal abnormalities

  • Neuromuscular conditions

  • Trauma or infection

Symptoms:

  • Visible spinal curvature or uneven shoulders/hips

  • Muscle tightness or imbalance

  • Back pain or discomfort

  • Reduced spinal mobility in some cases

Physiotherapy Treatment:
✅ Postural correction and strengthening exercises
✅ Stretching tight muscles and mobilising restricted areas
✅ Breathing techniques to improve chest expansion
✅ Education on self-management and activity modification

Long-Term Recovery:
While physiotherapy cannot “cure” scoliosis, it improves function, reduces pain, and supports spinal health, helping you maintain an active lifestyle.
