Dizzy Spells, spinning or Vertigo? Physiotherapy Can Help You Find Balance

What Is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a false sensation of spinning or motion, commonly due to inner ear dysfunction. The most frequent cause treated by physiotherapy is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

What Causes Vertigo?

  • Loose calcium crystals in the inner ear (BPPV)

  • Head trauma or sudden movement

  • Viral infections affecting the vestibular system

  • Migraines or vestibular disorders

Signs & Symptoms:

  • Dizziness when rolling in bed or looking up/down

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Balance issues or light-headedness

  • Anxiety related to sudden movement

Physiotherapy Treatment for Vertigo:
✅ Repositioning manoeuvres (e.g., Epley)
✅ Balance and vestibular retraining
✅ Neck mobility and postural correction
✅ Education and prevention strategies

Long-Term Recovery:
Most BPPV cases resolve in 1–3 sessions. Physiotherapy restores balance, reduces fear of movement, and prevents recurrence.
