Compartment Syndrome: Managing Exercise-Induced Lower Leg Pain

What Is Compartment Syndrome?
A condition where pressure builds within the muscle compartments of the lower leg, restricting blood flow and nerve signals. It can be acute (trauma) or chronic (exercise-induced).

Causes:

  • Overtraining or high-impact activity

  • Muscle swelling in tight fascia

  • Direct trauma or bleeding into muscle

  • Poor circulation or anatomical factors

Symptoms:

  • Cramping or tightness during exercise

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness

  • Pain that eases with rest

  • Swelling or visible muscle bulge

Physiotherapy Treatment:
✅ Activity modification and gait analysis
✅ Stretching and myofascial release
✅ Strengthening and biomechanical correction
✅ Referral guidance for surgical evaluation if needed

Long-Term Recovery:
For many, conservative physio care reduces symptoms and improves function. If surgery is needed, we guide post-op rehab for safe return to sport.
